You could try to play a Warrior constantly at around 15% health. They are normally in Berserker mode.

I never understood the berserker class..basically just a warrior who can't tank but does more damage?

At low level the get the Frenzy ability which is similar to Rogue backstab and Monk Flying Kick. It's essentially another round of swings with a damage modifier. They started out with a focus on the ability to "summon" axes given they had axe parts in their bags for throwing purposes... But that sort of died off since throwing blows. Zerkers are top tier DPS. Cause they started out with almost no utility or tank ability (whereas rogues have SOS among other things). Eventually they have Zerkers snare, stun, blind, fear and such. But those sort of got phased out and watered down due to their ridiculous DPS potential. They are essentially a Glass Canon, with many of their huge DPS discs requiring they be damaged or have some detrimental effect on them to work (root or blind specifically).

Originally it was basically a rogue with 2 handed weapons. Except, they could tank better, had better race selection, and Frenzy (their version of Backstab) could be used at range and didn't require you to face any particular part of the mob. Plus being able to use two handed weapons is purely an advantage due to riposte and other mechanics. I believe that rogues were initially better dps because of these advantages, which made the berserker completely pointless. Why play a dps class if you're not the best dps? Then berserkers complained until they started to match rogue dps, then rogues started to complain... and repeat a few dozen times. Such a dumb idea to add a new class that was 95% the same as an already existing class. It's too bad that the berserker class never made it in Vanguard. The class was designed to have a rage meter; as your health decreased your rage increased, which had the effect of lowering your defense and raising your offense. This would require the player to maintain a fragile balance between their health and rage. A well-played berserker was intended to be the best dps in the game.

Make a warrior, use 2h weapons, and stay below 40% health.

zerker was just a cool idea for a new dps class...it got tweaked over time and developed (as all classes from original eq did over time) unique abilities and niche roles. largely a dps class. when last i played on live high end zerkers were on par with rogue (i.e. top tier) dps in the game on most raid encounters.
tanking was possible once you got some AA points. from a role play perspective the game was lacking a top tier dps class that melee'd face to face with the enemy. | ||
