and it would have taken you the exact same amount of time to get 52 as it had before. They removed hell levels but spread the extra exp needed in them across levels 1-50.

Every level is a hell level for a Paladin.

I thought I read somewhere that you lose double the XP when you die in any level immediately following a hell level.

If memory serves, it was during the hell levels that the xp loss was huge. Basically because you needed so much xp to get through a hell level and a the death loss is calculated as a percentage of the total xp to get through the level.
i.e. if it takes one million xps to go from 30 to 31, and the death loss was 10%, you'd lose 100,000 xps if you died and were level 30. Then once you hit 31, maybe the xp from 31 to 32 would be say 500,000 with the same death penalty, you'd lose only 50,000 xps

In hell you lose 1 blue when you die (which is equal to 2 blue from a regular level since hell level is double) then in the level after hell you lose 4 blues! I always remember it being like this is classic and it is the same now.

I think the first 10 levels are hell, if only to weed out the weak. Depends on your class though.
51-60 were all hell levels of increasing difficulty if I remember right.

all the levels before new spells are hell levels for casters also.
You cant increase in a mob difficulty tier because technically you are still a level 24, just because your toon is at 28 doesnt mean your power level is. Course, for casters the level they get new spells plus the next 1 or 2 is amazing.

they all had a heavier xp burdon than the 1-50 levels... but there were 3 actual hell levels each alot worst the then previous 51. mini hell. took slightly longer than 52 to complete, but generally speaking most people didnt notice it as it was expected to be alot tougher than 50 due to it being added afetr an expansion 54 Medium Hell. This was a noticable increase in xp requirements 59 All seven levels of hell and a few more of hades. This was the hell level to end all hell levels. Some people (casual) spents weeks and even months in this level. as an iksar monk in a constant state of fighting in a velks frenzy group it took around 36 hours to complete this level (1 session). If the average person played 4 hours a day this would have taken about 2 weeks (if you factor in time to find a group etc) they eventually evened out the xp progression from 1-50 and from 51-60 so hell levels became a thing of the past
