Random Clinical Trial showing that masks don't do anything to prevent the spread of the common cold

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19216002/
Quote:
Results: Thirty-two health care workers completed the study, resulting in 2464 subject days. There were 2 colds during this time period, 1 in each group. Of the 8 symptoms recorded daily, subjects in the mask group were significantly more likely to experience headache during the study period (P < .05). Subjects living with children were more likely to have high cold severity scores over the course of the study.

Conclusion: Face mask use in health care workers has not been demonstrated to provide benefit in terms of cold symptoms or getting colds. A larger study is needed to definitively establish noninferiority of no mask use.

None of the studies we reviewed established a conclusive relationship between mask ⁄ respirator use and protection against influenza infection. Some useful clues, however, could be gleaned. Subanalyses performed for one of the larger randomised controlled studies in a household setting found evidence of reduced rates of influenza-like illness if household contacts consistently wore the mask or respira-tor

You pulled a Bart Simpson and upped the wordcount of your post with filler; a single link (N95 vs Surgical / Medical Mask) would have sufficed. But on to the contents...

Conclusions and Relevance Among outpatient health care personnel, N95 respirators vs medical masks as worn by participants in this trial resulted in no significant difference in the incidence of laboratory-confirmed influenza.
These people aren't likely to be interacting in the same enclosed area for extended periods of time. The argument for mask-use is hinged on the claim that it lessens the risk of spread when groups of people are indoors, which would explain why prisons saw an uptick in cases when the outside population did not.

The overall statewide positivity rate in New York is around 6.5%, according to the governor's office. In New York prisons, the positivity rate is 16.5%, according to the Correctional Association of New York, an independent organization that serves as a monitor under state law.
Also, in the link you included above, there was no mention of the all-important non-mask wearing group which is a prerequisite for any link you post since you claim that "masks don't do anything".

Spoiler Alert - Masks don't do anything

Stop trying to derail the thread with your Koch nonsense.
Arnold Palmer Alert - Your mantra isn't doing anything.

A debate ought to involve other related and contributing factors without either distracting from the main topic. If you cannot see where the two are related or where one contributes to the other, than the debate will not be a compelling.

As you were the one who made this overtly political from the start, and continue to do so, you only have yourself to thank. I would have preferred to ignore the politics of the day altogether.

However, it's interesting how when the underpinnings of your argument are associated with arguments of other like-minded individuals, suddenly politics is off-limits. It's okay if you wield politics against others repeatedly, and for no other purpose than to feel good/right, but the moment that political argument is turned on its head or explored more thoroughly, you demand the thread stay on topic. Which is it? Are politics allowed to be discussed or not?

Bart Simpson, Arnold Palmer, Koch Brothers. You're all over the place.

Are you claiming people should be wearing masks outside at the beach?

You haven't been debating. You've been critical of the source and disguising a political argument with a medical one, without providing any proof the masks people are wearing today do anything to stop the spread of Covid

I don't care about Bart Simpson and Arnold Palmer

Please provide links to multiple random clinical trials that show those flimsy masks the vast majority of people are wearing do anything. Keep in mind most people have been wearing the same mask for a year, so the degradation of their effectiveness (if any) can't be understated

Bart Simpson, Arnold Palmer, Wikipedia, Politifact, Rolling Stone . ect. ect. ect.

Just stop it

You link the CDC as evidence and yet, were I to do the same you would disregard it outright, lumping it in with Rolling Stone magazine.

That said, the elderly are most at risk of that blog details. These warnings would be worth considering for those of an age or with certain conditions such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, etc. Again, an ounce of prevention is worth an ounce of cure.

People have been wearing masks while mowing lawns and walking in heavily polluted areas. Even kids' toys come with warning labels, not to bring Tickle-Me-Elmo back into the conversation. Wouldn't want to derail the thread once and for all.

If what you gathered from that I'm arguing for outdoor mask-use, than I don't know what to tell you.

Too many references? Who knew online debates could be so complicated?!

You've been critical of my sources, except you haven't shown why they aren't to be taken seriously. So, if we're going by your definition, you haven't been debating either.

Go ahead and find me multiple (randomized) clinical trials on the CDC's website that proves you right

If you want to have the opinion that masks have a placebo effect that makes people "feel safe" I'll grant you that, but that's completely different than irrefutable proof they actually do something to prevent the spread

You've been trying to derail the thread since your first post - keep trying if you want /shrug
