"Most favorite things from the 80's? "

-- Hair that actually had fluff and body

-- Classy women's pumps and nigh-universal pencil skirts

-- Children-oriented television that had action and excitement. Even my little daughter likes the older stuff better than most the boring modern productions.

-- Atari VCS (ok 70's technically but still huge in the early 80's) and Nintendo Entertainment System

-- Green Elf is about to die

-- 80's music

-- "reality TV" was barely extant

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Things I do NOT miss from the 80's:

-- The cars were horrible

-- Men's fashion was even worse

-- Threat of global nuclear war

-- Huge eyeglasses

As a rule that was a pretty good decade as far as decades go. The 90's were nice too, albeit generally much more toned-down than the 80's were.

"Top Gun" is an allright film. The correct way to watch it is to fast forward to the flight scenes and skip everything else. The actors and plot don't matter. Of particular note, towards the end there's a very good (and tragically short) shot of an F-14 locked in a rolling scissors with several F-5's. "Final Countdown" was also neat; it had F-14's playing with T-6's (masquerading as Zekes) and one of the F-14 pilots nearly put his plane in the drink. The Navy was very keen on its propaganda during the 80's.
