Leveled my Mage to 50 in cloth armor in less than 5 days play time.
Besides that, the mage epic is much more substantial than the necro one, given that your pet is the base of your dps/soloing ability.
Necro has better survivability, self healing etc.
Mage can summon mod rods, which are more mana efficient and can pump them out faster than necro feeds. On raids typically mod rods are more in demand, based on the fact that they can be picked up whenever someone needs them. Yes they take health, but its still efficient to just CH the user.
