Well don't get me wrong. I LOVE mages, as my class in sig suggests (times 3...rofl, only class I've played since Classic dropped and still play today). I think you'd enjoy the class. However, if you want something that is intended to group....

Mage is a solo creature. It's best use is utility. It can do well in groups yes, but what it provides in groups, for the most part, are able to be provided by other classes and they would be better at it (Wizard. Rogue.). They aren't exactly sought after unless the group needs/wants a pet tank, a coth (only 55+ with appropriate spell), or summoned items. Otherwise, mage would mostly only be picked up for groups if you know the people in the groups (make friends, develop cliques) or if the group wasn't expecting anything in particular to fill in that spot. Mages are more than capable of handling themselves alone (lol innuendo) and everyone knows it. They are among the top echelons of solo classes. Still are on Live today. Just how the class was built.

Something like a Cleric or an enchanter etc however are very group centric. They will be heavily sought after and you will rarely be alone [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

But most importantly, play what you wanna play. If you wanna play mage I'm happy for you, I love them as well =D. Could give you some tips etc if you want. I'm simply saying, if your previous post about wanting to group more than anything is true, mage was not your best choice.

Id say go mage, primarily because I feel they solo well and are easier to play. I would say necro but it seems mages get groups easier. Coming from wow which is much easier the mage will make an easier transition, and the ability to get groups will keep it fun. I know for me If i get into the solo all the time mode I lose interest in the game. Eq's best feature is the awesome community and friends you can have on here. IMO

The person above is correct though, a mage may get more groups than a necro but it still isnt a sought after class.

Aye, as a mage your best bet is going to be make friends and make them fast. Because it will be very rare a group actually desires a mage, and no one is going to be hunting your class down. That shouldn't be a problem though as the point of EQ, and MMO's in general, is to make friends so meh.

There is an upside though... mages have second highest AoE dmg next to wizards. You'll be more likely to get slots in AoE groups (sick xp, lots of fun) later on, only ones being more desirable than you being the puller (usually a tankish class), enchanters, clerics, and wizards. That's a rather large step up. You'll need to be in the 50-60 range though and that kind of group isn't overly common on here. =/

Another important consideration is if you want to group or solo primarily. Certain classes, like Rogue/Warrior, won't be able to level without a group.

Necros fulfill everything you said quite well. Except they have a more difficult time finding groups as they are mostly a solo class. Also, they do no close combat damage.

Rogues/Monks are good at close combat damage but have no spells. They are much easier to get groups for though.
I disagree about necros having a difficult time finding groups. If anyone's grouped with a good necro they can surely vouch for the necro's utility. Assuming you're in a dungeon with undead (most high levels do) necros put out charmed hasted pet DPS while healing mana free and CCing through snare / root / mez.

If your necro friends are not doing these things, send em my way.

Agreed, as a necro, I don't have much spare time in a group. A necro can bring a lot to the table and will mainly act as a good dps (don't expect to meet a mage or monk dps on a xp group, unless you hunt undead) and as fuel to the group. If your group tends to run on diesel, add a necro and it will run on regular petrol, much like an enchanter although he does it differently (the chanty would make your group run on kerosene).
Having said that, I haven't met a lot of necro who knew how to play their class to its fullest in group (and I learn something new everytime I group) and an underplayed necro is a liability, probably more than any other class (except maybe a tank).

You might like Enchanter. They are always welcome in groups. They cast spells and don't tank at all. They also have summonable pets. The pet is kind of weak and you can't control it, it only attacks anything that hits you, but you can charm monsters and use them as your pet instead. This might fit what you want better. You won't be a damage class though, mainly crowd control and buffs.

red = you can pvp other players, if you can find any. Going to be dead there until kunark finally drops. Blue is strictly player versus environment.
