Before you go too far in picking one race or another, is there actual proof that charisma affects charm breaking on this particular server?

Everything I've read and everyone I've talked to says yes.

If you want to min/max stats, be an Erudite. You also get Blackburrow, which is great XP thanks to fangs.

If you want to do Stein of Moggok at level 8 and have Hide, which can be handy with Charming, be a Dark Elf. You also get EC tunnel, which is great for the occasional gear handout, some low-level moneymaking, and buffs that make leveling much faster.

Otherwise, pick whatever you think looks the coolest. Yes, you can use illusions to look like whatever you want -- but at the end of the day, you will always want your "true" form to look cool.

EDIT: Unless you're RPing for some ungodly reason, be... ungodly. That is, Agnostic.
