1) They were REALLY fucking effective and mere mortals killed all the witches.
or
2) Witches didn't exist, Jesus didn't have magic powers, Religion was founded by some dude finding a plant that makes you feel REALLY good, and nothing was based on science up until the 20th century.

the thing about craters being circular is kew tho, like "why are there no glancing blow-shaped, dragging craters shaped like a plane's crash-landing pattern?"

the answer is that all the compression and stuff turns the impact into an explosion, just by the dispersion of all that kinetic energy. it's not just rocks hitting things -- impacts on the scale like we see on the moon from earth were all both kinetic impacts of relatively large bodies and massive chemical detonations with a spherical type pattern. however that is a cool angle you are trying out there ^^
