TANF was never intended to be a permanent thing you could live on, or a thing that’s going to continue to cost more and more for the government. It’s right there in the name, TEMPORARY

I would be a lot more for social programs if they were made a whole lot harder to exploit. I dunno if you’ve ever had to apply for any, but it’s a nightmare process based on client feedback. Part of the reason they are so slow is because they are underfunded and part of the reason is they have to cut through so much bullshit

I know it’s not TANF, but the amount of people in my job who legit ask me if they can go on disability because of their drug addiction, or because sometimes they get (non-debilitating) anxiety is ridiculous. I want to say “No! You have no chance of being accepted, so please don’t apply! Because you are just bogging down an already slow system with this bullshit”. But I can’t say that, I have to give them the information about where they can apply if they ask out of a client-centered model

But yknow that’s actually not true. You actually can get on disability for your substance abuse. Here’s a way. Try drinking yourself to death, and quite likely one of 2 things will happen. If you don’t die of cirrhosis of the liver, you might live long enough to give yourself “wet brain” which is alcohol-induced dementia. Then you can qualify for your state’s long term care insurance, because you are mentally disabled beyond being able to care for yourself. Then the state will pay to put you in a memory care group home. But they can’t go hands on, so if you want to keep waking out the door to the gas station and buy beer and get shithoused, you can do it. All on the state government’s dollar. I’ve seen it happen

Ridiculous cases like these are the small minority, but the amount of overall bullshit the system sees is not so small

Sorry, Commie, your milk bones are being redistributed in the name of racial and economic justice. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

I broke my ankle here in the Netherlands about 6 months ago. Trip to the ER, x-rays, emergency surgery, overnight stay in the hospital, and a handful of different pain killers. All covered by standard insurance without question, including followup check ups and physical therapy. My insurance costs are 100 euro a month and my total deductible is 350 euro, which still no one has asked me to pay all these months later

What’s crazy is I had multiple moments I could call “American health insurance ptsd” throughout the process. Rather than call an ambulance, my American brain insisted I drive myself to the ER, because ambulance rides are crazy expensive right? Not here apparently! ER doc was in shock when I told him I drove there. Especially since it was my right ankle.

After surgery, when they told me they were going to keep me overnight for monitoring, I had a bit of a panic attack and was like “no no it’s fine I live like 5 minutes away I can just go home I’m fine, call me an Uber”. And the nurses are all like wtf are you talking about, you have insurance right? And I’m like yeah but will that insurance cover an overnight stay for just a foot? And they’re again like wtf… once they realized I was American they’re all like oooohhhh, dude you’re fine relax and watch tv, it’s all covered. They had a good laugh.

For profit health insurance is fucked. Once you’ve seen how it could be, you realize how bad it really is.

Yeah I mean it shows up and we deposit the check. Certainly don’t need it but wtf
Maybe you should think of all the people in your life who do need it then and bring that perspective into your selfish opinion.

Living out your days in a medicare/medicaid based nursing home isnt exactly the lap of luxury pal, its the bottom of the barrel and quite depressing.

On the contrary, if that person wasn't an alcoholic, worked hard, saved for retirement then they might actually be spending their days in a much nicer situation.

The government should provide a bare minimum level of basic care, which is the situation you pointed out, but you are acting like this person will be living in some high standard of care, which anyone who has worked in the nursing home industry knows that medicare doesn't provide that.... not even close. The same goes for living on disability.. its not a good way to live... its poverty.

This. And most Americans are so close minded, untraveled, uneducated and unaware of how it is everwhere else (or have been brainwashed to think "socialism").

In the meantime the for profit insurance industry is eating their cake and laughing all the way, with the help of the GOP and right wing disinformation dividing people so much that even considering anything the other side proposes is just unthinkable for them.

This is also why the GOP and elites are trying to defund education. Uneducated are easier to control.
