Lol honestly, I took a lot of debate type courses during my years at uni and have never heard of this approach. I have a feeling that if someone had cried 'Red herring!', during a clarification before the debate even started they would have been laughed off campus.

The issue is an ambiguous blur without a clear cut definition. Any attempt to argue it on either side is an exercise in logical fallacy. I don't understand your hesitance to address this, if you are so sure of your stance my request would only serve to further your argument.
