Sisyphus was sentenced to an eternity by Zeus to forever push a boulder up a hill, only to have the boulder come down again. Ad infinitum.

A sisyphean task is something that is never complete, always needs redoing. Think of things like returning shopping carts to the cart corral. People will get them, shop with them, and then leave them places. The task never ever ends. It's something you just do repeatedly.

People should be executed by the state for not returning their shopping carts in a neat and orderly fashion. Make Zues proud.
