Time is what is being taken from Americans. Even moreso than material comforts. We have the longest working week in the developed world. Least amount of vaction time and no guaranteed leave. Almost no recourse if you get fired unless you get your boss calling you a faggot in writing or something.
The shareholder class seems to rallying to make us all have less time. This is done by making sure workers rights continue to be non-existent...and people are ever more desperate for money. No healthcare, education, training, or living minimum wage is on the menu.
They don't want anyone to starve -- they just want everyone to be so busy and desperate for a little dough so they can't think.
Living expenses keep rising. Wages keep falling. Education is declining. Automation is coming.
The rich are building luxury bomb shelters for apocalyptic scenarios.

I work four days a week and vacation in South America frequently. Colorado and Wyoming still can’t be beat for my money though
