GRRM already explained why dany's history changed a bit between the first two books. and its because he hadnt really fleshed out the world. once he had, he realized that politically it didnt make sense for dany to have spent time in the first city, not to mention it makes it harder to explain how Illyrio got his hands in that cookie jar.

I don't even enjoy those stories for the main plot but just for the world building. Granted the main story is still pretty good in my opinion. Did them on audiobook as well, the reader wasn't very good.
