I see people saying that a new red server is needed, so I took that to mean that the server is unplayable in some way. It's exciting to hear if that's not actually the case.
Given the smaller player-base, are there any classes in particular that would better fit into joining folks in on the fun? Or is Red a primarily solo experience?

Red is good the way it is minus the population. I would play it right now but I cant. Unless you have 6 level 60s then there is still stuff to do.
It will be mostly a solo thing though. If the population was higher then maybe not. If you want to go melee because casters are boring monk would be the best way to go.

I played green for a tiny bit a year ago, but I never kept at it. I'm back and I am down to play on red. I'm a super new Everquest player and I don't remember how to do anything, I just reinstalled today. Gonna make a Ogre Shaman, I will return and post his name soon. *Crosses fingers* Hopefully more people play red. Farm them Iksar berserker clubs, sell them or use them as the new circulation if high levels won't help you. Use monks as melee and level them toons up.
This last part might be discouraging but often times an OP guild is dependent on people losing interest and they will. 3 times I have heard of an unbeatable guild and then they all have disappeared.
