Finally figured out what MY particular issue is.
Always goes back to basics. You know, "is the damn thing plugged in?" kinda stuff. I checked my speed. 0.5mbps download and 1.5mbps upload on a 15mbps connection. Modem issue. Meh. Servers not populating on server select is simply a latency issue. Finding out what your own particular problem is - that's the hard part.

In my experience yes it has to do with a slow/crappy internet connection, especially when using wireless and ESPECIALLY on unencrypted networks. However EQEmu has a small bit of info on it in their FAQ that tells you how to flush your DNS (it did correct the problem for me once)
