Because they are basically doing their private version of kickstarter. Only they are marketing the game as a fully funded production.
They aren't hurting for money to develop this game, they just want more money, it's no different than the myriad of pre order bonuses that pretty much every big game offers now.

IMO, it's either 1) They're greedy bastards (as you said) or 2) They see risk involved in the production of EQN and don't want to risk any of their money in the develop thus the Kickstarter approach.

How do you know they are not hurting for money?

Because people use the kickstarter route when they do not have enough money to pay the bills while developing their game.

Their entire game is based on the idea of crowdsourcing, which I was onboard for. Now they are crowdsourcing their income while developing their crowdsourced content... which I can't help but laugh at.

I don't know why you guys think this is crowdfunding, they are just basically selling "preorders" with early access and bonuses. This type of thing is the industry standard now, it's just a way for them to get more of your money. Actually I think it could benefit them if people think they are buying into the development process, or "helping" fund the game, the approach of not just selling it as early access bonus is actually pretty genius. Sony has plenty of fuckin cash but they can't stop themselves from coming up with ways to get even more of it.

I find the idea of "pre-ordering" a free to play game laughable. Perhaps that is the only reason I am so upset about this news. The game has been marketed as a free to play since the announcement because that is SOE's modern business model for games. The idea you have to "invest" into the development phase does not sit well with me and I am disappointed this game is going to be a flop that many others have heralded. Ashame too because I was really excited about it.
(you still never said how you knew they were not hurting for cash)

Well Smedley has said multiple times that PS2 was their most profitable game to date. If the company is really in need of crowdfunding after their most successful game I doubt he would still be the CEO.

I'm not saying that aren't trying to make it look like it's some sort of crowdfunding effort, I think that they know people get into that shit and feel like they are an important part of the game when they are helping fund it's development. Like I said I think this is actually a really smart way to sell early access, you can be a "founder" of EQNext, really exhilarating isn't it?

I thought it was cool at launch, but this is just... not EQ.

I'll be passing on this game entirely.

Holy shit.... $60 or $100 to buy into Alpha access of a free to play game????? Are you kidding me? My interest in this game is quickly diminishing, I was excited for it, but the more I learn, the less interested I am.
