XP wasn't good until it had been out for about a year and a half and they had eliminated the bulk of the problems (mainly shitty driver support).

windows 8.1 is light years ahead of windows 7, especially in gui accelleration & optimization
with the 8.1 update 1 that came 2 days ago windows 8 went down from 2gb ram requirement to 1gb ram, and from 30gb storage requirement to 16gb, that makes windows 8 more light weight than vista/windows 7 for older computers. the ONLY reason people dislike 8 is the start menu, which is getting fixed in Windows 8.1 update 2 (coming summer, see picture) [You must be logged in to view images. Get 8 if you're getting anything

Microsoft is now charging companies that insist on staying on xp through the nose for individual support.
and stupid people in charge actually think they're getting a good deal out of this because they didn't have to upgrade -.-

64 bit xp (aka only one worth using on modern hardware) has a lot of random driver issues and gotchas as it was never fully supported in the first place. I used it for a little bit but eventually went back to 7 at the time
also with xp or 7 youre stuck using an obsolete version of directx that dosnt have all the tite optimizations that 8 does

Obviously it's time to move on to newer OS for new hardware, but having to kick it off the boat like this is testament to how excellent XP was. Been a windows user since 95 and XP was the shiz. It's almost like they had to draw a line in the sand just to get people to buy anything new. About a year ago heard a thing on the news that 40% of the world's computers were still running XP. Yesterday, they said 30% of businesses are still running XP. 12 years later? Amazing. Like the AK-47 or B-52 of operating systems. 100 years later still in use.
