I use Eurosoft virtual diag when suspecting hardware failure. Mainly for the logs it collects so that i can show the client.

Boot up Ubuntu from disk and see if you can extract any important files - then proceed to burn your harddrive and get a new one.

There could be cheaper elsewhere -^ this was the 1st one I clicked on but it'll let u know if HD is good or bad & copies 250GB in less than 45 mins. hth
