They probably over-valued the innate AC bonus, thinking that being able to break the AC cap that other races are limited to would make it the must play race for warriors. This is sort of ironic since the size (easy to target) and FSI of ogres are arguably more important. Giving iksars a huge penalty with some lore behind it let them feel balanced giving the AC bonus.

IMO it's super dumb. Yes, iksars have scales...They also have TEETH and a TAIL. Why not do something with that, like a racial attack bonus that's easily offset by adjustments to starting strength.

It's pretty similar silly restriction to some of the class specific weapon restrictions, intended for balance but unrealistic. Monks can't learn to use slashing/piercing weapons? Dude can do a flying kick and a dragon punch but can't figure out how to use the dagger* that wizards start with?

That's not a balance restriction. Monks are not meant to draw blood, hence no pierce/slash.

You don't think bludgeoning the shit out of someone with a giant staff doesn't draw blood?

Not in everquest, nope. They only cause bruises and concussions. Eventually the brain starts bleeding and the mob dies.

That's how it works.

15 years of EQ and I've not seen a drop of blood... ever.

The word on the street in Qeynos Hills back in 1999 was don't use slashing weapons on bears and wolves or else you will only get ruined pelts!

Wow, I had totally forgotten about this little tidbit until now. The funny thing is that it sounded so plausible at the time, I mean the game was crazy complicated why not put in code to ruin pelts if you used slashing? lol

They were big Star Trek nerds, when the Jem'Hadar started to wear armor in DS9 they allowed them to wear plate.

Funny because iksars can wear plate in eq2. Definitely a balance thing I think.

Actually the shaolin monks came to be because the citizens were not permitted to have weapons, so the open fisted bagua matial arts were started for defense without having sharp weapons. I think blunt weapons come from a similar concept
