EQ2 at launch was a lot of fun for me. Even enjoyed the first couple expansions. Did some raiding and got geared up, made some alts, but eventually moved on to WoW where my real life friends were.

Went back when it became F2P and they changed a bunch of stuff like starting cities, added new playable race and mercs. Essentially dumbing it down even more.

I thought the lore was that it was 500 years after EQ, set in the future after Luclin explodes and causes a catastrophe. But then I read somewhere that it was all a dream or an alternate reality or some shit. Not sure what they were thinking...

The current state of EQ2 is awful, but outside of the Launch + first 2 months of the game, EQ2 was probably the absolute best MMO of all time until Velious released. Merc's killed the game again, adding in a bunch of flavor races, cash shops, flying mounts, "cataclysm", arena and arena gear, daily quests etc just made it a terrible and different WoW clone.

That being said the TLE beta has been surprisingly good. I played EQ2 for 6 years and find myself still seeing instances and zones I've never seen before on the new beta server. The pvp servers are fun and they have been constantly releasing fixes (even on a Sunday at 2 am). There are some things they cant fix, item revamps and things like that making stats so inflated, but even with that some of the content is surprisingly still difficult. They've tweaked exp; you basically have to group to level, and there's just a ton of shit to do.

I'd recommend the TLE servers once they come live, DBG seems to actually be listening, and the game really will give you a ton of hours worth of content. You can mentor friends and go back down to lower level content, there's housing and tradeskilling with tens of thousands of recipes. Citizenship quests, betrayal quests, upgrading your spells, there's just so much to do even if some of it is meaningless in this day and age of the game.

Graphics hold up surprisingly well to modern day mmo's and looks really good on extreme quality. Gameplay wise it's smooth and doesn't feel clunky at all. I'd recommend it to anyone who played EQ1; seeing Rivervale as it is in EQ2 and finally getting to do a bixie bee hive dungeon and just the multitude of random shit was fun, but clearly I'm biased and rambling at this point.

edit: I'm talking about the new progression servers if anyone is confused about my comments on the current state of the game.

I thought eq2 was great at launch. I remember being in full groups and wiping was possible. I played maybe two months. Years later around the expansion that added gfay I played again and it was obvious that the game has been wowified.

The game is still good and has always been overshadowed by wow.

The crafting system was pretty awesome. You could die with exp debt during a creating session. I remember my blacksmith almost burning to death all the time

Played it from the start. I hated locked combat and that you could not kite. Then I played in the Nagafen pvp server. Was cool..able to steam roll groups of blues etc. Then they nerfed the way resists worked and it just got shitty.

Some of the things I didn't like that turned me off from EQ2 classic was the way you advanced classes, I hated having to lvl to 30-40 (cant remember) before I could become a necro. Also like Bigtokes said, the locked combat was terrible and the lack of kiting was a huge bummer.

I will admit I enjoyed the crap out of crafting.

The game released in a bad time, in the WoW era. I remember after promoting to a summoner or whatever the class was before necro, I decided to give wow a try and never turned back to EQ2.

Also to mention the game was extremely taxing on computers during that time, as opposed to say wow.

EQ2 is a great game, it's a bit clunky and it's not all that pleasing on the eyes but holy shit does it ever have content.

A handful of us Faceless Order guys are going to be rolling an EQ2 guild on the PvE TLP server opening up on the 21st if anybody wants to join in on the fun hit me up via a PM here. We'll get you hooked up.

progression servers are already fucked. no exile, a bunch of fucking retards talking about why something shouldnt be in the game when it should be for fake reasons, or unfounded ones.

Also I am pretty sure at this point the devs are saying that things have been voted off because they are too fucking lazy to get it done.

I had a beast of a computer and EQ2 brought it to its knees. Could never play on high settings. WoW simply crushed it though. As time passed, more and more people left for WoW.

I played EQ2 at launch, was pretty fun. I played a Berserker before they got nerfed it was very OP best group tank, best snap agro, and top dps it was fun while it lasted.

Moved to WoW after the combat changes nerfed berserkers to normalcy, had a lot of fun there too in vanilla .
