Necro is way hardier than mage. What will you do as a mage when things go south? A necro has several options.

Pet wise a mage is better and has to be, because that's essentially all the mage has. So for lazy farming of easy mobs the mage is hands down better. If you want to farm hard stuff the necro will win every day.
easy. when things go south, you poof pet and CoH yourself to clear agro or you time another chain.

I played a Mage for seven years on Live. Got to Level 84 and never even got close to getting my Epic.
I still say that damn flying horse is an EQ myth!

Necro pet vs mage epic pet? Is this really a question or a troll post?

Borderline afk trash farming: go mage
Sniping nameds deep in a dungeon: go necro (or ench)

That's exactly why I'm leveling a mage up now. Killing furies or farming tradeskill mats or whatever while I playing other games or watching movies.

The problem is that now it's getting to where I rarely focus on the game enough to play my bard main. I haven't done anything in Velious except get him a CS tooth and bound in Thurgadin.

I do seafuries occasionally... spectre pet + encyclopedia necrotheurgia destroys them (don't even need to fear kite if you're feeling lazy). It's not the easiest item to get, but I'd bet it's a lot easier than mage epic.
