![]() Pet DPS will not go down when giving him a weapon with less damage than its fists.
Let's say your level 4 pet hits for 12 damage on average, that means his "weapon" (fist) is a 6 dmg weapon. Any weapon in EQ will hit for 2x base damage. This base damage is the least your pet wil hit for, no matter what weapon he's given. This means giving him a weapon with more than 6 damage will increase how hard he hits. If you give him a rusty dagger with 3 damage, he will use the weapon but it will use the base damage of his fist. A cheap 15+ damage 2her can be very strong on a low level pet class. For example, if the weapon's damage is 25, your pet will hit for 50! At higher levels, your pet will be hitting for 60+ and since Weighted Axe is no longer an option, there just aren't many weapons out there that will actually increase their normal damage. In this case you want to give them weapons that proc. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe procs that normally only apply to certain creatures when wielded by a player (such as Dismiss Undead proc) will actually proc on *any* enemy if a pet is wielding it. Also, offhand-only items allow your pet to dual wield (if it's at level that it *can* dual wield) even with a 2her weapon equipped. So you could give your pet a fine steel two-hand sword for example plus a torch, and it will dual wield.
