I rolled a naked enchanter and was able to group and level super quick. Enchanters don't need a lot of gear and you can snag spell money from some helpful people in Thunderdome.

Instead its poorly populated and often mostly by PvE players or super twink gankers. When I came to join the RED99 community I was interested in PvP yet all I found was empty zones and super twinks who gank endlessly until you leave the zone. Don't be fooled by the whole TD guild. They have people who use that guild to find people to gank and do so often. They also have guild members who enjoy training and PKing fellow guild members when it suits them. Basically Red99 is a failed server now with a super low population, non competitive pvp and many lousy, bitter losers. A few nice people but really it is a joke as a pvp server.

Red could be so great. Initial pvp for new players is a fungi twink chasing them around CB/Unrest/MM. It's fun when there are a decent number of players to fight them off, but having your group get wrecked and camped by the person or forced to leave by LNS is not fun and leads people to play like a pve server.

I know in Thunderdome we were told repeatedly in Guildinfo and in guild chat to avoid Crushbone, Unrest, Mistmoore and CoM. Now all of these zones are fun to level in and often the only place that is viable to find a group (due to major low population). Once you get past Crushbone, Mistmoore and Unrest, many people group up in City of Mist due to the cool loot drops and the exp. In this zone you can still get hardcore griefed by players who level up, then Delevel so they can be super twinked in ToV gear etc. Also bards tend to come in the zone who are OOR and they intentionally train lower groups so they can maximize their aoe bard kiting. OOR monks have also trained groups in CoM with FD. I have died just as much to intentional training from OOR players than I have due to PvP, so it can get pretty bad. Then the person who trained often logs in an in range toon and starts picking off naked toons on a CR, for YTs, until those on a CR call LNS. Considering the brutally low server pop, this is beyond annoying. It can take an hour to get a group going, if not more. Players end up losing experience and end up LNS from the zone. So when you are a new player, all the fun quickly gets sucked out of the game. Most people like a game because it is fun. Sadly the Red99 community has a fair sized pool of people who are intent on destroying that fun. They only think of themselves and could care less if the server population drops below 60 during prime hours. They are so desperate for YTs that nothing else matters. New players will almost never be able to compete against this due to the vast difference in gear, dps and resists. This server does have some decent and fun people but with such a low population, the options for grouping are very low and for some classes, soloing can be brutally painful. The best thing they can do to revitalize Red99 is an announced server wipe with staggered expansion progression. Perhaps only to Kunark if the server population can't handle another 20+ empty zones. On the other hand, you could join the server as is and experience all this "fun" for yourself.
