Let me weigh in on this.

I am a 'new' everquest player in that I never played until Project 99 less than a year ago.

My first character was a Barbarian Shaman, but I ONLY made him because I was told not to roll my primary choice, Iksar Monk.

That Barbarian hasn't even hit 20 yet because I simply took the plunge and rolled the Iksar Monk. It was SO MUCH FUN. With Feign you can do a LOT of things, and don't forget Necromancer gets Feign. Also, you can get yourself a Pre nerf Circlet of Shadow which is an item that is considered a 'clickie' that INSTANTLY turns you invisible when you fire it. This lets you pull of some crazy stuff.

I say go ahead and roll the Iksar Necromancer. The regen is HUGE at max level and it's super fun being part of the master race.

Iksar for life. Never forget.

You ruined your lands soft-skins! You'll not ruin ours!

EDIT: Going to chime in with some other informative stuff that might be of concern. I, as a new player with no clue what I was doing, made it from Cabilis (iksar starting city) to East Commonlands TUnnel all by myself as a level 5 Iksar Monk. No Feign. No sneaking. Just a Sense Heading skill and a pack full of Spiderling Silk to sell. If you want some HUGELY entertaining videos with a ton of helpful information, check out Reptox's video series, Everquest Classic Adventures. I'll link them for you. Amazing vids and it's thanks to this video series that I even started playing. First video Now, the first couple of vids are OKAY. But after the first couple, they get really good. So watch at least 4 before deciding you don't like them. It also bears mention that halfway through the series he switches to a new Youtube channel for reasons I wont get into. I'll link the first video in the series that's on the new channel for your convenience. It's number 9 btw

As for things like banking, etc. Weight isn't as big a deal for you as it is for monks who get a weight penalty, but you'll want to keep most of your money in your bank. But remember. Everyone hates you. Cause you're a lizard. But that's okay! We're wily. Simply go to somewhere like East Commonlands Tunnel (the major tradehub of the game) and ask if someone can Sow you. Someone will. It's a run speed enchant. Then you ask if there's anyone able to invis you for a bank run. Someone usually will. Then you just run into Freeport, zone into East Freeport and into the bank. Don't go all the way in, but stay on the left side of the wall. Then zoon out and look around the wall till you can see the banker. THen click on him. BOOM. Because he doesn't see you, he thinks you're just some random soft-skin. Bank away. Then just wait for someone who can invis you. This doesn't usually take long, with the proximity to ECT. It's very common for Iksar's to ask foir invis in there. You could even throw osmeone a couple plat if you're nice.

So those were the big issues for me when I started. Banking, getting around, etc. Don't worry. You'll get Feign Death which lets you basically avoid everything. And invis! Woohoo!
Thank you for the detailed response I really appreciate it, I think I'm going to go with Iksar. Despite everything else, I've always thought they were the best / coolest looking race anyways, and I know how to maneuver around Cabalis.

Don't forget to use the Project 99 Wiki. It's AMAZINGLY HELPFUL. Seriously. With that at your disposal for quests, maps and item information, you should be fine on your own.

I'm glad you've decided to go with the true race, brother. Those soft-skins will never understand what it takes to be a real adventurer.

Started as a DE necro, ended up rerolling half way through to create Iksar. When I was considering my next character class to create, it's evident that there are several 'good' race choices for most every class. For necromancers, hands down, it's all about Iksar.

The reasons are outlined simply in so many threads, it really shouldn't have to be repeated again - but here it is anyways: regeneration. -20% xp is a bit rough, but so what, the fun is in the journey. Kill one more thing for every 5 things you take down.

Faction hurts sometimes, but honestly isn't really that bad. Once you get call of bones, you can bank in Neriak. You can also buy and sell (allbeit at slightly junk prices) in freeport with no faction work required. You can feign death (don't even need to feign) and bank at Freeport effortlessly as well. Not to mention that as a necro, you will eventually be able to easily obtain your OT hammer, which gives you access to a bank (regardless of faction you can bank in outpost if you're careful), and a big porting hub on the server to get where you need to go. Field of bone/cabilis isn't very far away either.

I'm sure there are a bunch of other places you could sneak around in and bank at.. once you get higher level you can basically invis to alot of banks, pop out and eat a few hits, feign death and bank anyways. Keep an eye out for neutral vendors too, or vendors that will deal with you in skeletal form (Oggok vendors, alot of freeport) etc. Most of neriak is amiable to skeletal form (care of the SK back towards necro guild area). Finally, faction can always be repaired/gained which can be a goal to work towards if it is important to you.

Did I mention regeneration? Dozens of times I've been feigned while leveling in terrible spots and being able to regen health quickly has saved me more time then I can count (see below the difference in feigned regen). When you start losing 22/32 hp a tick with lich/demi lich, having it offset by regeneration keeps you efficient. Without it, you have to lifetap/drain (even standing to cast lifetap/drain is inefficient coupled with the exchange rate). There is a such thing as min/maxing, but I think the race choice for a necromancer goes beyond that. It's really just common sense. When you get going, look me up and I'll see if I can help you get some starting money for spells and equipment!

Edit (copy from wiki Iksar entry):

Both Iksar and Trolls have higher HP regeneration rates (per tick):

Level 01-19: 4 sitting, 2 feigned, 2 standing
Level 20-49: 6 sitting, 2 feigned, 2 standing
Level 50: 8 sitting, 2 feigned, 2 standing
Level 51-55: 12 sitting, 8 feigned, 6 standing
Level 56-59: 16 sitting, 12 feigned, 10 standing
Level 60: 18 sitting, 14 feigned, 12 standing

Comparatively, these are the HP regeneration rates (per tick) for all other races:

Level 01-19: 2 sitting, 1 feigned, 1 standing
Level 20-49: 3 sitting, 1 feigned, 1 standing
Level 50: 4 sitting, 1 feigned, 1 standing
Level 51-55: 5 sitting, 3 feigned, 2 standing
Level 56-59: 6 sitting, 4 feigned, 3 standing
Level 60: 7 sitting, 5 feigned, 4 standing

Oh, and another note about Iksar faction issues - they are pretty much irrelevant in velious. I believe everyone starts on level ground. You will be able to bank/vendor in Thurg with no work, and then after deciding your alignment, will gain a secondary bank/city if you so desire one.

Play the race you will enjoy the most for any reason. If you prefer a dark elf or human for role play for example then don't worry about insane racials

Do the wine quest in Neriak and you won't need skeleton form

Iksar necromancer not KOS in Qeynos Aquaducts. Gypsies buy and sell to them, and you can buy and sell gems to convert gold and silver into plat.

The regeneration is just so powerful.

Roll an Iksar and stay in Kunark for a while. You can pretty much solo into your 20s in Kurns. Thankfully, there's a lot of undead in Norrath for you to play with at various levels, such as Befallen, Lower Guk, and Unrest, and getting to those locations lets you see a lot of Norrath.
