Norrath is actually a post-apocalyptic Terra. Haleys comet crashes into Terra and a bunch of nukes get fired off in the process. This alters the face of the earth. Humans are warped by nuclear, cosmic, and spiritual radiation.

History is lost. We lose the ability to communicate long distances. Everything is forgotten and eventually from the ashes is born myriad new cultures. Some entities have gathered enough nuclear/cosmic/spiritual radiation to become "Gods" in their own right.

The combine emperor is the ruins of our own civilization at its apex. Elon Musk created a business called Pyramid Portals after buying the Pyramids of Giza from Egypt and unlocking the Secret of the Pharaohs, namely Wizard Ports.

This theory is flawless because it accounts for variants of racial stereotypes exhibited in the fantasy menagerie of humanoid races. Humans are gentiles. Erudites are black people. Dwarves are jewish people. Gnomes are short people. Halflings are less short people who love beer. Elves are humans who cut the ears of their infants like circumcision.
