Bard soloing 1v1

To kill a mob, I am currently loading up my dots and charming the mob. That way it takes damage while not attacking me. Could this strategy be improved? I seem to take a lot of damage, and the kill rate isn't the best. I am experimenting with mezzing so that I can get two dots in before it starts attacking me. Thanks!

And some expert level questions... How should a bard solo a mob that summons (like eldrig the old)? What about casters? Is there a way to make sure they never cast on you? I've drained their mana before, but that takes a LONG time.
