Never tested anti-summoned spells out on them personally, but I've heard from many about the tactic. It's just one of the quirks of the game that was probably unintended but left in because of everything else that required attention back then. For what it's worth, all hornets were apparently changed to insects in a patch that is beyond the scope of Project1999, around some point in 2002.

There are reports that these, along with the cinder and ash hornets, are no longer considered summoned creatures.

I am a 54 shaman who has spent several levels at the hornet nest in BW...
From what Ive heard hornets are no longer considered summoned creatures, which really doesnt concern me since I have no anti-summoned spells... 54 Ogre BattleMystic on Luclin server--Aggrok

I wouldsay yes, but why root/dot? You have summoned line of dd spells as a druid.

No way should a druid be root/dotting these guys. Hornets are one of the few mobs in the game that are summoned that aren't pets. Ensnare then kite with banish class spells...huge return for mana loss.

yes, difinatly use banish summond or the line of summond dd spells. and i have to laugh about the first post, 165wis at lvl 50..... thats horable, at lvl 50 you should easyly have 200, most druids i know are at lowest 195 at taht lvl, unless its half elf or human but thats still very low. Either way root dot is ok but in summond cases are spell makes up for that. Oh yea, a druid meeleing soulds like that druid has ahd a very hard life.....

These were impossible to me at lvl 43, so i stuck to cinders and ash hornets, kiting using expel summoned.
However, at 44 using Banish summoned (hits for 585 points) i didnt have much of a problem taking the Embers.
With any hornet, always snare, throw in a DoT and kite, blasting with anti summoned spells. Don't try to porcupine because they just hit way too hard. Soloing is always boring but i tried hornets with a partner and exp wasn't that great. I would recommend soloing only.
