Its easy for those of us with years of experience to write off evil races as no big deal, but for a literal brand new person who hasn't learned a single city map much less all the little nuances of NPC faction...yeah evil was built in this game as a more challenging choice by design. I wouldn't blame anyone for going ultra goodie goodie on their first EQ play through.

And remember there's no shame in rerolling if you are hooked but not hooked on your class/race choice. Many of us rerolled multiple times back in 99 before we found a playstyle that grabbed us.

Don't forget that as a dark elf you have the racial ability to Hide which will make you invisible until you move. Since you don't have a pet to worry about you should hide everytime you sit. Most green things that scowl at you won't attack you unless they see you sitting down, hiding first will keep them from wandering by and whacking you while you med.
Caveat that Hide is a toss up though and it can fail but you will still appear as hidden to yourself when you're actually able to be seen. /con things (right click) to see if they can see you (if they went from some other thing to being "indifferent", then you're safe).
