Honestly the problem is the promotion of the server, there is none. It relies on word of mouth and such but most people who play here played EQ and they know people who used to play EQ but all of those resources are tapped if. If anyone from those groups wants to play here they are playing here. The only way to raise population is to start marketing Project 1999 as a great free to play MMO, the only problem is you can't tell people to pirate the client.

Problem is if you send them to project1999.org they'll read getting started and be like.. I have to buy the client? Fuck this place. If you send them to a page that tells them to pirate you have to deal with legal troubles. That wouldn't be issue if you just make a page on a free blog host or something as it's their responsibility to remove the page but if you're buying advertising to that page you've now created a money link to the pirate page which can be traced and I doubt anyone is going to go through the trouble to creating an untraceable source of money for buying advertising to a parasite hosted page telling people to pirate the client. That is what it would take though unless someone not associated with the project feels like exposing themselves to the minor legal risk of buying advertising to a page that tells people to pirate and gives them a link to a torrent.

could simply say "to play you need the client, you can either buy it from "insert link" or find one of the many alternate sources on the internet"

im sure most people could figure out where to get the client.

You guys really think a random non-EQ player is going to last even 1 hour with the early level EQ experience being what it is? Be realistic here. You can play WoW for free or even something like Runes of Magic which ramps up players way better + doesn't require all of the complicated installation shit.

I don't think that's the target audience of the server

Trying to pick up people that never or rarely played EQ isn't going to work.

About the only suggestion half decent is global OOC. P99 blue had it in the beginning then the population got huge and they removed it. Global auction wouldn't hurt either considering there are people that rarely use the forums that play here.
