the exploration agent gives you a probe training book and 8 probes for scanning.

It's actually getting really fucking annoying and I'm considering quitting it and going mining.

Ah, I don't think I ever used an exploration agent in my life. Always did combat missions. Probing is only fun when you're finding someone to hunt them down and blow them up. Took a while to learn, but got decent with it, hear it's loads easier now.
