Based on the wiki entry Thex Dagger needs range 40, don't have one readily available in game. Also non-magic?

Is this Range Distance stat only cosmetic? More to the point, does anyone have first-hand experience of accidentally throwing one of these items?

I do not recall ever throwing my Fork, even when hitting the Range Attack button.
