I will be moving to a 4 acre home with some woods. Plan is to have chickens, a big garden etc. I grew up on a farm and we had barn cats and I think they are great for having around to keep the rodents away.
I have never owned my own pet though. Any advice from this crowd on having an outdoor cat? Can you have an indoor and an outdoor cat or do they tend to prefer one or the other?

They prefer one over the other.
Indoor cats don't really have the training or mentorship of outdoor cats and their lifestyles. Plus they bring stuff from outside in which is annoying. Just make sure they're all neuter and vaxxed and have a warm shelter for cold winter nights. Raccoons and possums and bugs can be problematic if you leave cat food laying about. Try to feed them at specific times and not over feed them. Remember for the winter they need to fatten up tho. And a little extra protein goes a long way. My outside feral are actually quite sociable and would probably become inside cats. Thats not going to happen. Our inside ones where rescues from trashcans and starvation at the pet store in the warehouse. The one "outside" cat that became inside almost died as a kitten from an infection and just wasn't able to be adopted. They lose their instinct tho and get run over ez, eaten by dogs if they aren't exclusively outside, or interfered with too much. Occasionally my outside ferals will get pets. They mostly hang out and watch us garden and stuff tho. They aren't coddled. Barn cats will die. Horses will kick them. Birds of prey will grab kittens. Occasionally one gets bigger than the eagles tho and kills one for team cat. Life expectancy for outside cats is like 5-7 years if well cared for. U may have to help them kill raccoons and possoms. Sometimes they can live a lot longer though. Some of ours are going on 7 years + we have had cars, dogs, wildlife kill them. One died of old age/illness. Pretty sure he was like 15+ Living outside exclusively increases their intelligence like 10 fold. I don't think I could transition my inside ones to outside tho. They'd last a year at most if lucky. It helps them a lot to have other cat mentors who where raised outside fully by mom. Not taken away as kittens. Etc.

Good advice on the mentoring aspect. So probably try and source the cats from a similar home.
Do you think I could get the cats to live in peace with chickens or will they just end up killing the chickens?

Oof. Cats love killing all birds here.
We have wild chickens in the neighborhood. They have their own turf outside our property. The big ones are usually pretty safe. Occasionally one gets separated and wanders close. Then we have a chicken that is disassembled and given to us like some artful sacrifice. Maybe if they are raised with them and well fed. Chickens are a lot more beneficial then cats. A few acres. Like 5 or 6 they could maybe be ok. Ur going to have chicken kills tho. Kinda hard to get around that. We lost chickens to rats, dogs, hawks, owles, foxes etc when we had only chickens. They lived in a large coop in a fenced in yard. Nocturnal predators always find a way tho. Cats are real assholes and hunt for pleasure. They can be real pests sometimes.

I have a ton of cat memes. Have to dig them out of my Ukraine memes now though. Will take some effort.
I have to involuntarily sleep a bit. However I will dig them out and resurrect this thread. This I swear! Also my cat marked the wall near the food. Sprayed some ammonia since I didn't have any fresh bioactive deodorizer. Idk y... so far a one off incident. I'm guessing outside cats are marking outside.
