thats the false equivalency [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.] you are supremely talented at debate and from how you go about it I gather it's entirely intuitive. whether it is or is not though it is a marvel.

to be clear, I did not say that, but I do not disagree with it either, conditionally. i don't recognize the scenario that you outlined to be anywhere in the realm of the scenario in the song though. context is relevant. and thank you for not considering my words dastardly. they weren't meant that way ^^
if thing in drink means date rape
and
song say thing in drink
then
what does song mean?

not dastardly it refers to a previous word culture controversy where yall dictionary humpers annoyed me [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

in the bad scenario, the implication of a friend saying she suspected someone put something in her drink would be that the thing in the drink was a date rape drug, which is something we have had to deal with for the last 20-30 years. as far as i know, this was not a thing in the 40s/50s and if it was, it was not as prevalent as it is today.

In the song, the girl is enjoying herself, implies she wants to stay, but does not want to suffer the slutshaming of the era. When she says "what's in this drink?" she most certainly is not suggesting it's been tainted with date rape drug. She's either suggesting it is strong, or more likely presenting it as an excuse to stay, which conforms to the silly nature of the song and the habit of blaming socially unacceptable behavior on alcohol in that era.

and now I feel I have been duped into typing far more than any sane person should on this topic and in a way feel like this is somehow an indictment on my usual attempts to argue first principles in a vacuum.

you are a goober.

if you have a different answer to the bar query I'll engage. right now it appears everyone understands it culturally as meaning date rape.

and that aint festive.
This is called "Confirmation Bias".

You hear "What's in this drink?" and think date rape drug.

That's your fault for misunderstanding the lyrics due to your psychotic preconceptions of the world.

What's in this drink?

Sugar?
Saccharine?
Corn Syrup?
Stevia?
Equal?
Red&Bleu#5
Caramel Coloring?
Cancer?
Neutrinos?
Quarks?
HEVs?
Drugs?

It could be anything.

Most likely to be drugs though [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

It's a pretty classic way of flirting with someone to say "What's in this drink?"

It's a way of admitting to feeling something...
