Most european countries often cited as examples of functional socialism are only able to afford their social programs because they have absolutely no military infrastructure and rely on NATO (really the US since nobody else pays in) for their defense. So the US is the least socialist of them, and also isn't a sitting duck for aggressive foreign actors. Many of the social programs the US does have are poorly managed, bloated, and incentivize single motherhood and government dependency, which is strongly correlated with generational poverty and crime.
So yeah socialism still sucks.

We are still very socialist and also very inefficient. Europeans have high speed rail. We have canceled flights
We could maintain freedom and yet have government priorities to make our lives better that weren’t simply dialysis or defense contracts. Why is dialysis the only medical treatment subsidized fully by the US federal government? It’s nonsense, once you’re on dialysis you need new kidneys. We should make obesity illegal and make its promotion (fat people in media) illegal as well
