Expecting everyone to need post-secondary education confers problems of its own (such as delayed adulthood), but I agree it's almost necessary in today's society. Most employers are virtually unwilling to do significant on the job training anymore, and regular K-12 education has been so badly weakened and watered down that it's no longer adequate for preparing children for adulthood. A 4 year degree, today, carries similar relative worth as what a highschool diploma used to carry. It should never been allowed to get to that point, but it did, so for now folks'll have to tolerate debt loads and similar issues. Fixing that type of vast systemic problem requires political backbone that our present government simply does not have.

a job at mcdonalds has more honor (in a klingon sense) than most white collar jobs

A two year associates degree from a community college in Harris county costing like $5k total will get one a nursing degree. There are decent schooling options, the problem is we’ve told people they should go get $150k in debt and to expect that all degrees are equivalent

They aren’t and people should never take any debt for any reason ever. Usury is the greatest of all sins and no amount of bull shitting ourselves will ever change this. Pay cash or don’t purchase anything. It’s in the Bible

The real problem is that any of the various degrees cost anyone anything, I paid cash for all of my useless college and wouldn't think twice if the next jerk got theirs for free

School is good but it should be for a purpise. Most people would benefit from trade schools over a 4 year degree for sure
No, they wouldn't. Trades only function as profitable, above-average income profession in most places because they're necessary things that not a lot of people get into.

If most people didn't go to college, the livelihoods of most people in the trades would decrease and those people going into trades would be entering a flooded job market.

Every person that goes to college for basically anything is a person who isn't competing with you.

Our economy is a balance between unskilled laborers, skilled laborers, and educated laborers. The audacity of people without the foresight to recognize how fucking bad of an idea it is to disrupt that balance is stunning.

So, no, I don't even agree that higher education should only be an option if you have a purpose. Go get a degree in philosophy, or writing, or mathematics, or whatever if you want to, I don't give a shit. Education fundamentally needs to be easier to access to maintain a balanced working population.

No reason to go to college when all jobs are going to be service anyway as we develop AI and automation.

Sure, it should be easier and more affordable. Everything we’ve done to that effect has made it worse. The subsidies just get grifted by administrators and they hire adjunct professors working 6 days a week to make ends meet.

Education is a great thing. Sadly, our system doesn’t work that well. If I were 18, I’d to become an air traffic controller. If after 5-8 years of working I hated that, with my savings I’d then consider schooling for something different. Going into $100k debt right as you enter adulthood seems like a bad deal all things considered.

That’s just me though. I don’t like debt and I don’t like being beholden to other people.
