If Trump and his administration really truly cared about dealing with illegal immigration they would crack down on employers who hire them. This is the only truly effective solution, and policymakers have known this for decades. Unfortunately, the political will simply isn't there. Republicans won't do it because pro-business interests want the cheap labor, and Democrats won't do it because of latino voters and pro-business interests. Instead, they stir up their base with anti-immigration rhetoric and symoblic (and 100% ineffective) gestures like walls. Trump gutting the IRS investigations and enforcement unit (by slashing funding and putting incompetents in leadership roles) has single-handedly done more to harm immigration control than anything Obama did.
Makes me cringe every time I see a Trump supporter claim Trump is trying to, or even wants to, stop illegal immigration. Midwestern corporate farmers are going to keep bringing in illegals to pick their crops and Trump is going to keep hiring illegals to clean his hotels, so they're going to keep coming. | ||
