Not true. I helped a hispanic dude who flattened a spare on the Sonora Pass last winter. Apparently he blew front passenger, then replaced it with the spare instead of rotating the spare to the back tire for a 30 mile downhill loaded with sharp turns, blew his spare also, hitchhiked into Sonora to buy a tire, hitchhiked back, and THEN realized his bottle jack wasn't going to work to lift the front end now super low to the ground due to the small spare's rim.
He must've drove on his actual rim for quite some time too because it was bent. I had a scissor jack in the back of my expedition. Got him fixed up in no time.
I told he shouldn't drive on that bad rim any further than Modesto, but he probably recklessly drove to Bakersfield anyways.
