There are two things I think when I give lower level players my old items.
One do they seem like they are going to stick around for the long haul. Two is this just an alt of theirs. If I'm going to give something away I tend to just chit chat with the person get to know them and how they feel about EQ as well as their EQ experience. If they seem new and I get the feeling they are dedicated to making some sort of a long haul I'll offer them the item. Then I add them to my friends list and I check to see if they're online multiple times of day. Sorta stalker-ish but atleast I know that my items aren't being sold in EC or deleted in 2 days. So far it's been a win-win relationship for me and the new players I help. They regularly communicate with me and tell me about their progress. Getting to know people and regularly communicating with them is something welfare needs to do. There is a reason some people are homeless and don't have anything nice. They have poor money management skills and they will never get better at it. | ||

Unless people are being handed most/all of their slots in high level gear, I don't see this being a reason that removes their fun. There's plenty to look forward to, even in the immediate future, even if you get handed a 3-4 slots of excellent gear.
A lot of people who start here (and in most F2P MMOs), quit after a while. It's easy to hop on and try it, or see if it's like what you remember. But then friends / guild from other games bug you to group/raid with them, or there's some event/raid/new release/new content patch that sucks you away from this. And classic EQ isn't for everyone (or even most). I've started here about 3 times before I finally stuck around this last time. The first two times I was more interested in playing with friends in WoW and respectively EVE and just didn't have the time to really get into it. The third time I had the time but I approached it with the powergaming perspective I approached EQ back in the day but was disillusioned by how far behind the curve I was.
