What everyone has posted is 100% true.

Roll the character you can enjoy the most regardless of its +'s and -'s because you are going to get bored and at some point the game is going to be a grind, and this grind and really the entire quest to level 60 is a lot more fun when you are playing a character you love.

I personally don't have the soul or time to grind two characters to high level, let alone the initial character being done just to power level the mellee or hybrid that I actually want to play. Not for me...

I say pick the toon you love the most. Rangers can be a lot of fun and it was my main on live, but you will definitely get tired of being beaten mercilessly by large races in melee. Even some Shamans could squash my ranger at low levels... it hurts just to think about.

However, some "pharming classes" are just plain awesome classes. Druids are amazing, shamans are amazing, enchanters are too. Necros are amazing but seem sort of under-powered here on project 1999 compared to live.

You can't go wrong though... Iksar monk is a lot of fun and doesn't need a lot of gear...feign death makes exploring the game a lot more fun but being KOS makes it a lot less fun. Rogues are great at high levels and all the time, but being a lowbie naked rogue is HARD unless you get lucky and find a nice group to grind up with.

My ranger is fun and can add a lot to a group. I frequently pull, CC and tank all at the same time while doing dcent DPS. With long range on bows/arrows and sneak I can easily break camps (especially throwing Harmony into the mix since the really popular zones are all outdoor flagged). Having the ability to self-buff is pretty fantastic and even when I'm not tanking my buffs can be handy.

The big glaring issue is being at a huge disadvantage in PvP. Rangers just don't get good jousting weapons and most of your spells don't offer much beyond spamming root on someone.

If/when track gets fixed to actually be usable in PvP that can be extremely valuable and I do love having it available in PvE. You will have channelling which gives you an edge on monks/wars/rogues since you can channel port pots or pumice where they can't.

I also had the advantage of getting twinked by a friendly chap when I started on the server, making those early levels a lot less painful (no xp bonus when I started and a ~100 pop so grouping was very very rarely found)
This + this = TLDR
enter world and move on.
