Almost 2 weeks ago this was addressed on the P99 subReddit.

Someone asked about a new blue and you can see Rogean's reply right below it.

Looks like there will be a new blue at some point, but it's still TBD.

Hmm. I've been around since PEQ:TGC opened, and all the mobs were like popcorn and to get into kelethin you had to levitate up a tree and dash to the platform. And I'll tell ya, Gfay looks really weird w/o any fog. A few things worked though. That was well over 10yrs ago. PEQ is the original.

Anyway, as for here, it's Green, then finish blue progression, then maybe a new blue which yes the progression patches are filed for. That's basics. They have batted around what that progression speed should be, but more up in the air compared to the rest as it's a how rather than a what. Hows can change. Don't even think about whens.

The unfortunate reality is that we cant relive the hay day of live EQ classic.

The unfortunate reality is that we cant relive the hay day of project 1999.

I tried P99 back in 2010 and it was rough. It would be nice to experience the true classic era in it's working prime. Perhaps if they released patches according to how they were released on live, with no delay..
Otherwise I don't think I could spend 6 years playing EQ, After the 2 i've spent on p99 so far.

I never really stopped since release, at least with casual play. And I don't really worry about the "hay day" either, but just the mechanics as they're better than any modern games. The new blue server will be more on target, just whenever that happens; it'll be way more correct than this servers start obviously.

Yeah I liked launch state a lot on live (even the funky client hehe), was good stuff. Only thing is I wish I had more time with the game then, I was already really involved with UO and stuck with too many responsibilities with one of the largest guilds in the game that we founded. So I always took EQ a little more casually... even though I was raid leader for a guild hehe. And then full time work.... crap no, don't want to relive those days :P
My life moved forward, not nostalgia, just know what I like, and for the most part nothing WoW and beyond.

I'm curious about this - which mechanics are the best? In my view, EQ did some things really great and others not-so-great.
Great:
  • The rhythm of group combat (pull, fight, root, mezz, buff, all that stuff)
  • Difficulty / challenge level of PvE - it's challenging in an "old-school arcade" kind of way
  • Class balance & unique roles
  • Beautiful world - great to explore
  • Lots of race / class options

Not-so-great:
  • Killing stuff the only meaningful play experience, but they wasted effort implementing a lot of non-core stuff (crafting, thief skills, quests, PVP etc.)
  • All those races mean loads of starting cities and other level design that went largely un-used after the early levels
  • Lots of grinding on similar / same-y content
  • Competition for key loot makes it feel like waiting in line for an amusement ride
  • Economy is pretty broken re: inflation, money sinks, etc.

But I am eager to hear what your take is on why it's better than most modern games.

Re: waiting in line.
IMO just make the following zones PvP. Problem solved. WW/ToV/, ST, VP/PoA.
Not classic, but playing EQ with the Titanium client in 2016 isn't either.

Re: why it's better than modern games
1. No instances
2. Mob aggros you - it will chase you until they die or you die
3. Drama
4. No boxing forces to work together
5. Repop naked after death and work on CR.
6. ...Could go for a while...

Technically, games more modeled off of MUD's rather than single-player video RPG's.

MUD
mixed/open world
many skills/spells
challenging single mobs slow to kill
co-op/social emphasis
best you can do is survive

Video RPG
progression world
limited skills/spells simplified
easy kill hoards of mobs
instancing and easy solo play
everyone is the hero
