What the hell are these herp-derp economics?

Plain and simple: NOTHING about EQemu markets are rational!

They are derivations of people's misunderstanding of pricing and the dev's inability to manage the excess liquidity within their economies.

Right now PKT, GBS, Reed Belt, and pretty much everything (ex. manastones) should be plummeting in price because suitable substitutes are right around the corner and item holders are attempting to become liquid prior to the xpac.

You're overstating your point - the EQemu markets are pseudo-rational. The only debate is what percentage is rational and what percentage isn't. I highly doubt 99% of the p99 market is irrational.

Plat is created a lot more quickly on p99 than it was on live, which is why the prices for a lot of items don't really fall (FBSS), partially because there are only a few substitutes. Sky belts are only a situational substitute, although I think they're really good (AC/stats ftw) and want one for my Ranger.

I find it way more interesting that lower-level items' prices don't increase a lot more based on the same inflation.

You're talking FBSS (non-proc tradeable haste) vs. pure stats, it's a scarcity issue in that case. So sure there are SOME items whose demand is more inelastic contributing to relative price stability.

I think the lowbie items remain as such because their supply is eternally increasing and their demand is really linked to server pop. So while they face inflation due to the deflationary forces on 1pp, they likewise fall in real value because we have a fairly static server pop and an ever increasing supply.
