I actually thought the War of the Worlds version with Tom Cruise was very well done up to a certain point. The tripods were pretty frightening, I love that bass boat horn noise they made, ominous. And that scene where they are driving away with the tripod basically exploding the entire city behind them and the bridge is flipping over was extremely well shot. Best city destruction snapshot I could recall seeing up to that point in almost any movie

(Spoilers or whatevs)

It’s unfortunate that the entire movie tanks as soon as we get that protracted basement huddle with Tim Robbin’s character. Man that got boring and weird. And the rest of the movie continues to go downhill to a logically ridiculous idea that some species so much more advanced than us wouldn’t have anticipated the concept of germs

I love the tom cruise one! I wish it had 1 more 15 minuet scene in it to make it a tiny bit longer, and it would be one of my favorite movies. My only complaint with it is the 3rd act happens a little too fast.

Id have liked after the ferry scene, for them to have grouped up with that woman and her kids for like 15 mins, then they die or something and the movie caries on.

The basement scene was a down point in that movie for sure.

The movie did dread so damn well, which is such a rare quality. The buildup is fantastic, helped by scenes where the bodies are going down the river and the train is going by completely on fire. Then of course the mob scene realistic and terrifying

And then the ferry scene it’s like you have this built up feeling of dread and it’s presented as so hopeless. I was just thinking ok man, you’ve done all that you could, but you are completely fucked. Keep trying by all means, I still would to the very end. But you’re so fucked

The last time I remember such a good feeling of dread was the American version of grudge where that white woman is running from the house demons. Holy cow that was such delicious dread
