Thanks for the tips guys,

Sitting in EC is not my thing, I'm a trader in real life, and while I love it - I'm not going to sit around trying to make markets in EQ after working all day.

Life as a Ranger is definitely rough, I had a 50 shaman pre-kunark, but sold him for plat and retired for a year when it hit. That was definitely 10x easier, but I enjoy rangers so I'm gonna trudge through it.

I think you'd be surprised what Rangers can tank. I have ac/hp gear in all my slots in favor of extra str gear, I've tanked in 90% of my groups, without issue, leveling up - although it's definitely going to get worse as our defense cap doesn't raise past 200. However, i can tank for nonstop pulls in any camp in KC with a helm paladin healing me, or hell last group I had was a bard slowing/regenning, and a druid tossing me regrowth - I didn't need a heal for 20 minutes.

Problem is groups are under the impression that we're too squishy to tank, so just getting into one is a hassle. I want something to do when I can't find a group (which is a LOT). It's no fun to sit LFG, or get invited into a group, and then told NM, group mate has a guildy coming (which i'm sure is an excuse to not invite a ranger).

I can already solo in solb or KC, but having to heal 2k hp with a dinky 90 hp heal, and then med on top of that is just a pain in the ass. If I can solo something, afk 5 minutes, and come back and do it again - that would be fucking perfect.

Maybe I will try the peggy cloak thing, doing that 10x would probably be my best bet.

And Seafuries aren't really viable for a Ranger. One would drop me to 40% hp, and then I'd have to do my little heal/med dance for 5-10 minutes.

Pre 50 I feel rangers have no problems tanking for groups, properly equipped, It's the Kunark mobs that hit like trucks and have a ton of HP.

I love when i group with rangers, It's like they play 10x better than any other melee, because they have something to prove.

While there're a lot of things I like about classic EQ, I'll admit the dinky heals are annoying. But then again, so is the downtime. I guess it depends on how high the con is. If you're killing light blues, you won't be sitting as much. It's not so bad in a group because you have others to talk to and the downtime is less. But soloing it can take a while to regain mana. It gets better with Velious because we get panic animal. You can use it to reduce the amount you're hit, but sometimes it gets resisted and you have to time it so that you recast it before it breaks. It can also be dangerous because you have to really watch out for getting unwanted aggro. I used to do that in Eastern Wastes.

How much plat do you get killing bandits in West Karana for sashes? I used to do that, but I don't think it's 1k/hour like the hill giants or something else. My methods over the years were crude. One of the things I never did much was to camp items. I suppose if I had I would have made more plat. I did do a lot of plat farming in different zones. I liked doing the lower level zones because didn't want random deaths.

Greater Healing at 57. I bet you're looking forward to it. The experience penalty will be removed soon too. That's be a boon for grouping. Trueshot disc releases with Velious 55+.

Oh, one more thing, have you tried doing the hole? Or am I way off? I'm not even sure if the hole is available. I know it's a tough place. But it drops gems. If you can find a group there...

We had a 58 ranger tanking crypt in seb, with me as only healer, and didn't have any problems (never tried emperor, obviously). I was surprised.

Oh I was in KC a few days ago on my Druid and I got in a group with a 58 Ranger and a 56 Monk. Monk pulled Ranger tanked. Both had a Fungi and killer weapons. I spent more time looting than healing lol. A Ranger can kick some butt no doubt in a group. But solo they are just slow as hell. And they will be worse in Velious. Mobs there have a TON of hit points and hit like a freight train. I know they get panic animal but guess what they bring their little friends with them at times. With no FD or Gate guess what. Squish. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

It is a slow drawn out process to kill on a Ranger solo high up. A cat and mouse game. And a ton of downtime just like their cousins a Druid. Although a Druid can kill 4 at a time quad kitting to one on the Ranger. But hard to find 4 really high up mobs to do it. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

You're right that it's hard but that's why we have snare/ensnare/root/sow. If you get too much you snare em or root and run. What I would do is camp the snow griffen things and whatever else near the bridge near Grete Spaign that's next to the zone out to iceclad. I died sometimes. Can't avoid that.

Nothing was fast then. That must have been 2002 or early 2003. Have a screenshot of me in 2003. I was on a pvp server so I had that to worry about too. I usually found some kind of group in velious.

Generally the worst thing about soloing is being alone with nobody to talk to and not having a good healer. This is why I often chose to farm platinum or kill the easier cons; less sitting by myself.
