Ah! That could explain it for sure.

I was L40. Kunark hadn't been out long. My wife finally had her own account and I was helping her cleric level up in SRO. We were harassing the undead when I saw a cyclops on the next hill.

"What the hell is that thing doing in here?" I thought. "There aren't any cyclopses in the desert."

When I got closer I could see it was "an ancient cyclops". Wait wait wait, Lag... That's the critter! That's the one! But isn't he supposed to be in Ocean o--HRARGH!

"Oh shit it's attacking me!"

I barked at my wife to zone, that I probably wasn't going to make it.

I got him down to about 55% and had to LoH... I wasn't buffed up... gear was bad... I kept fighting.

We begin doing a funny dance-for-two involving Root and Greater Healing and /sit.

After about 10 minutes, we look like Balboa and Creed at the end of the rematch... neither wants to die but one of us soon will. We barely have any HP to see in the bar and I'm out of mana.

*KRA*BOOM*
You gain experience!!

I can't remember the wizard's name as he came up over the dune while I was looting and said, "You are one lucky dwarf."

I remember feeling like I'd worked for it. This was super-early 2000. There weren't many folks in jboots that hadn't gotten them in Najena, or hadn't bought the MQ from a wizard or druid. I was damned proud of my jboots and could barely bring myself to transfer servers (when transfers left you naked on the new server) when my friends did.
