the sun is really big, earth is really small by comparison, and while bigass solar flares are common, it's still a ridiculous game of chance that heavily favors earth

we can't even really measure how big the carrington event was, other than subjective information, auroras in mid-day, telegraphs functioning with power switched off etc

nothing even remotely close has occured since we developed the tech to study solar flares, so we have nothing to judge it by
