I recently read “Slouching towards utopia” and it was good and he made decent points, but the author is clearly very left of center and asks as if america hasn’t avoided some of the economic peril of places with more generous welfare systems that are now in greater debt, less able to attract productive immigrants, and also lower in terms of fertility rate (an underrated economic issue)

I haven't read this but I found this. Can't say if any of them are economists, but I urge you to completely ignore economists since economics isn't a science.
