I have three transgendered friends.
Two were male-to-female and one is still a male and is beginning hormone therapy. One who is already transformed used to be one of my brother's best friend from high school. My brother really (really) struggled with this. This was a guy who hung out with him during HS, who went after the ladies, who shared a lot. While my brother has come a long way, I'm not sure he'll ever really come to FULL terms with it. He is respectful of his friend, calls her "she" and by her new name, but it's a big change. For you, for everyone. And that's okay. It's okay to wonder, "How the hell am I supposed to process this?" I'm sure your friend is having similar questions and fears about his/her identity and future. When I met this guy (bro's friend) after she had her operation and had been a woman for a few years, it was really amazing. I felt like I was finally seeing who she was this whole time. I could see how happy it made her. I think the best thing you can do is just be supportive, but honest. If it's uncomfortable or hard for you, I think it's okay that you tell your friend that. "Hey, this is a lot to unpack. I'm going to need time, but I want to be here for you. I might have questions. I might just need time." (Insert your own feelings here.) Also, all of the transgendered people I know (again, male-to-female) are still attracted to women and have become lesbians. (I know there will be others transgendered folks out there who will be attracted to their "new" opposite sex.) Gender does NOT equal sexual orientation. A man can desperately long to become a woman, but if he's attracted to women, he will remain that way after the operation. Who he is (gender-wise) does not impact who he wants to be with.
