Well I could say the same thing about any art. I guess that's why you make the big bucks as an art critic tho, right?

That cactus blooms only once a year, and only if the summer is hot enough.
I am a certified photographer (Formally educated)

My opinion;

1st pic has alot of issues, first of all the umbrella is very distracting even with selective focus it is very noticeable (probably a result of the contrast of no color (the flower) to orange (the umbrella). The cactus is the subject and therefore should be larger (i.e. take up more space in the photo). 1/5

2nd pic is better, proper use of selective focus and the umbrella is hardly noticeable. The subject is in the rule of thirds. Much more detailed image of the subject although I would've like to have seen more of it (you cut it off the top, which could have just been a poor choice of crop) But overall not bad. 3/5

Stay at it and you'll train your "shooters eye" for better composition.

Went to a new bar downtown right after I got my cameras. Did some shots for them and got free drinks out of it!

Messing around with the new lens.
I do like this photo but I'm torn on the liquid on the glass both inside and out... the sweat on the outside gives it very natural look but leaves it shining at weird angles. You got a VERY narrow DoF on that... what is it, a 1.8, 1.4?

I'm more interested in the "Gluten Free Selection" and signs for strawberries. Once I saw one that was different I felt like I was playing Where's Waldo

I only have a point and shoot, I keep looking at DSLRs but never bite.
Was there a mirror, outside? I think it's really neat that you see someone nonchalantly taking a picture with coffee mug in hand while a mouse simply chills out, unafflicted by the proximity of a human. This totally adds to the composition for me.

This isn't a bad photo but I feel that you went a little bit too shallow with your depth of field. I like the idea of leaving the back or front portion of the artichoke blurred, but you caught more of a diagonal stripe down the middle. Move the artichoke more to the right a little and try to get some sun/shadows going on.. I never realized how cool artichokes looked!

What are you shooting with? (also clean your lens)
