![]() Techincally my first would be Dragon Gate. MMO that precedes Ultima Online, and you paid per minute (since it precedes subscriptions as well).
It took me 22 minutes (and $22) to make my first character. I was 15 with no income, so my parents said once was enough and I never played again. After that, I focused on cheaper endeavours with Warcraft II, Rebellion, and Heroes of Might and Magic 2 (yay email turn-by-turn play!). | ||

![]() I don't remember if I posted in here yet or not, so here goes:
July 3rd, 1999 I created Lagaidh the dwarven paladin. I allotted 11 extra points to CHA because the original description text said that was useful to a paladin. I played that character for 310 days as my main from the original game all the way through a smidge of the SoD expansion. I really didn't play much in 2005 and it was the last year I attended a raid with my guild, Sequel of Maelin Starpyre. Lagaidh was born on the Rathe and stayed there until Maelin opened. I had friends transfer over and they stayed on my butt until I did the same. When Lanys TVill opened, a few buddies of mine and I all recreated our toons there. We were going to have me skill up as a smith while they all stayed in rags and farmed whatever they could to pump money into the venture so that we could all be the first offering banded. It was working until a few just started keeping what they earned and outfitting. That was fine. It was their time and money. Me and my best hunting buddy returned to our mains on the Rathe. Lagaidh Smif the dwarven paladin and Toraque Hirsuane the half-elf ranger... we'd attempt crap whole groups wouldn't try. We died. A lot. I think I got my first rez for XP when I was over L50. I remember that first weekend. I was instantly hooked. I played all weekend and made it to L6. I remember asking Toraque at work on Monday if that was good or not. I remember my first group in Butcherblock. I kept running around in that early windowed mode of EQ where the big grey UI surrounded a smaller window. I remember a groupmate begging me to use Lay Hands! I did. It had no effect on the goblin that was my target. I remember my first trip out of Butcherblock. I followed closely behind someone with a lantern to get to Kelethin. I spent a lot of time farming rusty weapons and cloth armor from crushbone orcs. I saved up and bought bronze armor. I was L10 and didn't know what the person meant who told me I was an obvious twink. I thought he was calling me gay, heh. I remember saving and getting a PGT. I hunted with it in Oasis and NRO and when it procced I always thought a wizard was trying to steal the group's kill. I never did see that wizard... EverQuest, nearly thirteen years ago, was my first online gaming experience. I've played some WoW and some EQ2, but they are pale pretenders. I've started forum threads all over asking folks if EQ was just that good, or does that first MMO have the grip on the player's heart that no other game can match? I've never truly figured out the answer... EQ is my favorite to this day. I'm sure this is an opinion shared by most p99ers. Otherwise, why would they even be here?

I think my first online game I played somewhat seriously was Myth the Fallen Lords. An awesome RTS created by Bungie years before they created Halo.
