Mars is a shit hole without a breathable atmosphere. We can't even design a car engine that reliably make it past 200,000 miles or 10 years of wear and tear. What the fuck makes you think "we" are going to be able to sustain a self regenerating colony on Mars which doesn't even have liquid water?

We don't even know of any materials that we can accelerate to 5% of the speed of light without the fuel propelling it eradicating the ship it's thrusting back into photons.

mars isn't that far away, its really fuckin close. the tech to manufacture fuels and O2 on the surface of mars has already been demonstrated here. liquid water does briefly at times exist on the surface. very briefly, but it does. and who gives a shit if its frozen anyway? that means it's alot harder for it to get blasted away by solar winds.
